"DRDO Launches Project-76"; Future of India's Submarine Modernization



The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has embarked on an ambitious initiative with the launch of Project-76, aimed at developing indigenous conventional diesel submarines. This project is a crucial continuation of India's long-term submarine building program, focusing on enhancing the country's maritime capabilities with a significant emphasis on indigenous content.


## Overview of Project-76


Project-76 is set to design and develop six advanced diesel-electric submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. This technology allows submarines to operate without the need to surface frequently, significantly increasing their submerged endurance and stealth capabilities. The submarines are envisioned to have a submerged displacement of approximately 3,000 tons, representing a leap forward from previous designs.


The project aims to replace the aging Sindhughosh (Kilo) class submarines, ensuring that the Indian Navy maintains a robust fleet of modern submarines. The Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy is collaborating closely with the DRDO to bring this project to fruition, marking a pivotal milestone in India's pursuit of maritime supremacy.


## Indigenous Content and Technological Advancements


One of the primary goals of Project-76 is to maximize indigenous content in the submarines' design and construction. This includes the development of key systems such as weapons, combat management systems, sonars, communications, and electronic warfare suites. By reducing reliance on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), India aims to bolster its defense manufacturing capabilities and achieve greater self-reliance.


The submarines will also feature advanced technologies, including lithium-ion batteries and indigenous weapon control systems. The incorporation of these technologies is expected to enhance the operational effectiveness and versatility of the submarines, allowing them to undertake a wide range of missions, including intelligence gathering and surveillance.


## Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Module


A significant aspect of Project-76 is the integration of an AIP module, which is being developed by the DRDO. This module will enable the submarines to remain submerged for extended periods, reducing the risk of detection by enemy forces. The AIP system is designed to operate quietly, significantly lowering the submarines' acoustic signature and enhancing their stealth capabilities.


The AIP module utilizes phosphoric acid-based fuel cells that generate hydrogen, with the current power output expected to scale up to meet future requirements. The successful implementation of this technology will greatly enhance the operational range and endurance of the submarines, providing the Indian Navy with a strategic advantage in underwater warfare.


## Timeline and Future Prospects


The preliminary study for Project-76 has been approved by the Defence Ministry, with the formal case expected to be presented to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final approval. The project is anticipated to initiate the construction of prototypes by 2028, aligning with the Indian Navy's long-term submarine building program.


As part of a broader strategy, the Indian Navy aims to acquire a total of 18 conventional submarines and six nuclear attack submarines over the next three decades. Project-76 is a critical component of this strategy, reinforcing India's commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities in an increasingly complex security environment.
