Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has responded to criticism about delayed deliveries, poor quality, and lacklustre sales by increasing its focus and funding for research and development (R&D) to develop new aircraft projects for international and domestic military markets.
During a press conference at Aero India 2023 in Bangalore, C B Ananthakrishnan, the chairman and managing director of HAL, announced that the company is breaking with tradition by launching new products without a prior expression of interest from customers. This marks a departure from decades of practice at HAL.
According to C B Ananthakrishnan, HAL's chairman and managing director, the company is now moving forward with research and development (R&D) of new projects without a prior expression of interest from customers.
This marks a shift in the company's strategy as it is now convinced about its capabilities and the need for its products.
HAL plans to formulate its new approach by building an industrial ecosystem with the private sector to enhance manufacturing and funding.
For the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program, HAL has adopted a system integrator model and created a national aerospace ecosystem with the participation of around 140 design agencies and 100 production agencies.
