India's defence industry begins to expand

The private sector is being given a bigger role, which has led to huge and major corporate houses investing less in the defence industrial industry.


In addition to showcasing India's expertise in the aviation and aerospace fields, the Aero India 2023 exhibition in Bengaluru provided an opportunity to take a fresh look at the country's defence industry.


Over 80 nations were represented in the conference of the defence ministers that was held concurrently with the event. As a result, approximately half of the world was represented.


This is another evidence that the world has begun to accept India's narrative of progress and prosperity, in which the defence industry has begun to assume a prominent role.


This took time to develop; it began with the "Made in India" statement on September 25, 2014, just four months after the current prime minister took office on May 26, 2014.



Five of the 25 areas targeted by Make In India were directly tied to the production of defence products. They comprised 20% of the sectoral coverage and included aircraft, defence manufacturing, defence exports, electronic systems, and space & astronomy.


Due to a dearth of competent labour, defence manufacture did not advance as expected. On July 15, 2015, the government recognised this talent shortage and introduced "Skill India" at the national level.
